The Bible Is Trustworthy

Do you know what a malapropism is?

I do. Unfortunately. I have been the Queen of getting words and phrases mixed up. Let me give you a few of my examples.

  • “She rules with an iron thumb”
  • “I don’t want to rattle your boat”
  • “He’s like a bull in a china cabinet.”

There are more. My bloopers, completely unintentional, have brought varied responses…chuckles, snickers, gazes of unbelief. I’ve had to learn to laugh at myself…hilariously! One time, when giving my testimony in the church service, I said, (when describing how I had carefully listened to a certain preacher), “I listened with a fine-toothed comb!”

And once, I yelled at a cat that I nearly ran over, “You almost lost your lunch!” That time, I fell apart with laughter when I saw Ken’s look of unbelief!

I think I’m better now, but I still have to think ahead when I am speaking!

However, it is not that way with God…and aren’t you glad? Here…Psalm 19:8

  • The law of the LORD is perfect
  • The testimony of the LORD is sure
  • The precepts of the LORD are right
  • The commandment of the LORD is pure
  • The fear of the LORD is clean
  • The judgments of the LORD are true

BTW, my son once pointed out that all those descriptions are absolutes. There is no such thing as “more perfect” or “more right.”

One point to make over and over again with the old folk is that the Bible is absolutely trustworthy! Keep reminding them that people have tried to disprove it, get rid of it, mock it and change it, but God's Word will never pass away!

It's important to bring it up often because many old folk lived their lives in churches that mentioned the Bible sparsely or not at all. Truly. I guess it depends on your situation. Some workers deal with a room full of long term believers! Still...it doesn't hurt to hold up your Bible and remind them that this Book will always stand and always be true and always be trustworthy! Every time we are with our people, we should share the lesson from the Bible and then proclaim, holding the Book up for all to see, that your lesson came from God's Book the Bible and it can be trusted!

In the third edition of our large-print songbook I added at the very end, that old, old chorus, The B.I.B.L.E. It's a simple song, often thought of as a children's song, but it's not. I can't tell you how many times I have sung it in the time of trouble after spending time reading that B.I.B.L.E.!

Another old song!
“The Bible stands every test we give it,
       For its Author is divine…
       The Bible stands
       Though the hills may tumble,
       It will firmly stand
       When the earth shall crumble;
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation,
       For the Bible stands.”

“The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.” Psalm 12:6

Nary an error!
